Commission for Velvian!

It sure took a long time for me to finish, but I hope it was worth it...?


Velvian is a really cool character. He's got a neat design, and I had lotsa fun doing sketches of him. The pose I settled on here was quite random. I was on Tegaki, and then suddenly I got struck by this inner-eye vision thingy of how I should do the commission, so I quickly sketched down the pose on a new Tegaki entry, and later on I re-sketched it in Photoshop and started coloring it.
What took me so long was actually the flames. I realized I was horrible at drawing flames and decided not to work any more on this drawing until I've learned how to do them.
It resulted in a loooong wait, and eventually I managed to forget all about the commission !, and when I finally remembered it, I also remembered that flame issue.
So I drew that crappy "anthro in flames" deviation I have lying around somewhere in my gallery.. It was for the mere purpose of flame practice.
I've been "studying" flames a little lately, because to draw something I need to understand how it works, and/or their "pattern" as I for some reason call it; meaning how it acts and why it acts that way, and if the movement follows a specific pattern or not, ...like, "rules" sorta. I dunno how to explain it.. But I just need to know how things work.
I still haven't figured out this "pattern" thing when it comes to flames yet, that's why they don't look too good now.. But I figure they're ok. I mean, at least they don't look like pom-poms anymore..
Also, it turns out that the long delay actually brought something good with it. When I compare this picture to how it looked before I started working on it again tonight, I do see some slight improvement.
It still has a lot of flaws, but hopefully I'm the only one who notices...
Anyway, I'm considering myself done with this picture now, or I'll just risk overdoing it and that's not good.
